COFFEE
Consultancy Services.built for first-time owners

Whether you're planning your first café, setting up a roastery, or looking to fix what isn't working in an existing operation, the decisions you make in the first few months define whether the business becomes profitable — or a very expensive lesson. Our coffee consultancy services cover every part of that journey.

From site selection and financial modelling to bar flow design, menu engineering, barista training, and brand identity — we work with café and roastery owners across the UK to build businesses that are well-structured from the start. We don't trade in strategy documents that gather dust. We build systems your team can actually use, that hold up under pressure, and that scale when you're ready to grow. Each coffee shop consulting engagement is tailored to what you're actually trying to achieve.

Who This Is For

01

Opening your first café

You have the vision — the name, the vibe, maybe even the space. What you need now is a framework that turns all of that into a profitable, operational business. As a coffee business consultant working with first-time owners, we help you get from excitement to soft launch without the expensive detours.

02

Starting a roastery

Roasting is a different business to retail coffee. Equipment decisions, roast profiling, wholesale strategy, and green buying are all new territory. We've set up roasteries and can compress your learning curve considerably.

03

Scaling to multiple sites

Your first site works. Before you replicate it, you need documentation, systems, and managers who can run a business unit without you in the room. We build the operational infrastructure that makes growth sustainable.

04

Fixing an existing operation

Something isn't working — revenue, quality, team consistency, margin. We come in, audit what you have, diagnose the root causes, and build a clear action plan. No jargon, no unnecessary complexity.

How We Work

01

Discovery Call

Free · 30 minutes

We start with a conversation — no agenda, no pitch. You tell us what you're building, what stage you're at, and what's keeping you up at night. We tell you honestly whether and how we can help. If it's not the right fit, we'll say so.

02

Scoping & Proposal

1–2 weeks

If there's a fit, we put together a clear scope: what we'll do, in what order, over what timeframe, and at what cost. No hidden add-ons. You'll know exactly what you're getting before you commit to anything.

03

Engagement & Handover

Varies by project

We work alongside you through the agreed scope — on-site where useful, remote where efficient. Everything we produce is designed to be usable after we leave. The goal is always a confident handover, not an ongoing dependency.

Common Questions

What does a coffee consultant do?

A coffee consultant works alongside café and roastery owners to improve the quality, efficiency, and profitability of their operations. This can mean designing bar layouts, building training programmes, engineering menus and pricing, sourcing coffee suppliers, or helping with the full launch of a new business. At Notions Coffee, we focus on practical outcomes — systems and structures your team can actually use.

How much does coffee consulting cost?

It depends on the scope of engagement. A single focused project (like a bar flow audit or menu pricing review) will be priced differently to a full launch engagement from concept to opening. We always start with a free discovery call to understand what you're trying to achieve and give you a clear, honest picture of what an engagement with us would look like — and what it would cost.

Do you work with businesses outside the UK?

Our primary focus is the UK market, where we have the deepest knowledge of regulations, suppliers, and consumer trends. We do work with international clients on a case-by-case basis, particularly where the work is remote-friendly — such as financial modelling, menu engineering, or brand strategy.

How long does a typical engagement last?

This varies considerably. A focused bar flow or menu project might take two to four weeks. A full café launch engagement — from site selection to opening day — is typically a three to five month process. We don't artificially extend engagements. The goal is always to get you to where you need to be and hand over confidently.

We're already open — can you still help?

Absolutely. Many of our clients come to us after opening, when they've identified something that isn't working — a bar flow that slows service, a menu that doesn't perform commercially, a team without consistent standards. An operational audit is often the fastest way to identify what to fix and in what order.

What makes Notions Coffee different from other coffee consultants?

We come from the floor up. Our approach is built on real operational experience — not theory. We speak plainly, work practically, and measure success by whether the business is performing better after we leave. We don't sell ongoing retainers for problems we've already solved.

What They Say

Notions didn't just help us open — they changed how we think about running a café. Six months in and we're already planning a second site.
